Govt may offload up to 25% of its share in LIC in next 5 years

Image
The government on February 13 filed the draft red herring prospectus to sell 5% of its equity stake in LIC in March. Life Insurance Corporation of India NEW DELHI:  Even as the finance ministry is keeping an eye on global market conditions and whether they warrant deferring the initial share sale of the state-run Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), it is firming up a long-term, five-year plan to divest up to 25% of its equity in the firm, two officials familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. That may mean the initial share sale of 5% being followed up with a so-called FPO or follow-on public offer of 5-10% more within a year, they added. Wide participation of policyholders, employees, retail investors and financial institutions will enhance transparency and efficiency in managing affairs of LIC, in which the government will always hold the majority stake and exercise management control, the two people confirmed, speaking on condition of anonymity. “After the IPO, which h

The Alpine nation of nine million people was among few countries in the world to make jabs against the coronavirus compulsory for all adults.  The Alpine nation of nine million people was among few countries in the world to make jabs against the coronavirus compulsory for all adults. The law took effect in February and called for fines up to 3,600 euros ($3,940) from mid-March for those who do not comply. But Minister Karoline Edtstadler said the law’s “encroachment of fundamental rights” could no longer be justified by the danger posed by the pandemic. “After consultations with the health minister, we have decided that we will of course follow what the (expert) commission has said,” Edtstadler told reporters after a Cabinet meeting. Check Out :  https://www.arabnews.com/node/2039111/world

How Biden came around to banning Russian gas and oil

Image
The White House knows it risks a serious political hit if gas prices continue to rise. But on Tuesday,  President Biden  decided the risk was worth it in order to punish Moscow further for its war in Ukraine and to respond to bipartisan calls to cut off Russia oil and gas. President Biden A few factors made a difference in Biden’s decision. Political support for cutting off  Russia  in Washington and nationwide is high, and voices in both parties were calling for the move. Russian imports also make up a relatively small amount of the U.S. supply. Russia last year accounted for about 3 percent of U.S. foreign imports of crude oil and about 1 percent of the U.S. supply overall.  The desire to take a stand against Russian  President Vladimir Putin  is also high, making it difficult to avoid the choice even in a difficult midterm election year and a populace already irritated with rising prices.   Read More :   https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/597415-how-biden-came-around-to-ban

How Ukraine crisis laid bare Western biases, prejudices and double standards

Image
LONDON  : The invasion of   Ukraine   has exposed anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias across European policymaking and news media. For hundreds of thousands of hounded, rejected or stranded refugees and asylum-seekers, the revelations of prejudice and favoritism must come as no surprise, though. In the most recent incident — a textbook case of double standards — a Danish politician suggested that Ukrainian refugees could be exempt from laws that had allowed authorities to seize the assets of Syrian and Iranian refugees. Russia Ukraine Crisis Rasmus Stoklund, immigration spokesman for  Denmark ’s Social Democratic government, told Danish paper  Ekstra Bladet  last week that the so-called jewelry law should not be applied to Ukrainians fleeing the conflict because they are from a “nearby region.” Later, Stoklund said :  “The jewelry law is made for if you leave the nearby region where you are safe, and travel through safe countries … but that is not the case for Ukrainians.” Know More :  http

Oath Keepers Leader Stewart Rhodes Has Made His Worst Fears Come True

Image
Oath Keepers Leader Stewart Rhodes  In the days before his arrest,  Stewart Rhodes  could feel the authorities circling. He met me on a chilly Dallas evening in January in a room I’d booked at a chain hotel not far from where he lived, the neon lights of office parks and strip malls glowing outside. He wore dark jeans and a flannel shirt patterned in yellow and black, the colors of the Oath Keepers, one of the largest militant groups in the country, which Rhodes, 56, created in 2009 and has led since. He looked at me steadily with his right eye through a pair of glasses; his left eye, shot out in a handgun accident three decades before, was covered with a black patch. The Yale Law graduate normally relished the chance to spar with an interviewer, but on this night, he seemed a bit hollowed out. I asked if the prospect of prison was weighing on him. “I’m not going to give them the satisfaction of feeling like they’re getting to me,” he said. The one-year anniversary of January 6 was app

Angry Putin set to 'double down' in Ukraine, intel chiefs warn lawmakers

Image
Intelligence experts Tuesday painted a picture of an increasingly determined  Vladimir Putin  set to “double down” on his invasion of  Ukraine  despite being ill-prepared for the consequences to Russia’s economy and with little prospect for long-term success. Vladimir Putin “I think Putin is angry and frustrated right now. He's likely to double down and try to grind down the Ukrainian military with no regard for civilian casualties," CIA Director William Burns told lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee during the yearly worldwide threats hearing. "But the challenge that he faces, and this is the biggest question that's hung over our analysis of his planning for months now … is he has no sustainable political end game in the face of what is going to continue to be fierce resistance from Ukrainians.” Check Out :  https://thehill.com/policy/international/597406-angry-putin-set-to-double-down-in-ukraine-intel-chiefs-tell-lawmakers
